The war in Syria has already cost fourteen-year-old Osama Soleiman Merry so much. One bomb wiped out his house, his leg, and his parents.
After these incalculable losses, Osama fled to Lebanon with his brothers and uncle. The men now share cramped living quarters and struggle to create a better future for themselves and each other. Before the war, Osama was a brilliant student with enormous potential. His mother used to tell him, “Your future is promising.”
Osama cannot attend school in Lebanon for two reasons: it’s very difficult to navigate the long distance between home and school on one leg; the cost of school is out of reach for Osama and for many young Syrian refugees who seek refuge in this other land. Yet, despite the losses and the obstacles, Osama has never lost hope.
