Last year, hundreds of thousands of people protested on the streets in Turkey
Nobody had told them to do so!
Before that moment, I was feeling like i’ m surrounded by dolls, deaf people… No interest in what going on in this country, in what will happen to our freedom.
These events changed my perspective about Turkish society forever.
Moving to Turkey tore our family apart.
I remember the day we left.
Most of the families came with two bags. We came with two cars and two full trucks.
The last time I looked back at our house most of our neighbors were raising their hands and waving goodbye.
At the border gates, there was a queue extending as long as 5-10 KM. When we finally crossed the border, a nationalist Turkish band was playing an old Ottoman military march on giant speakers for us.
I thought that I was sleeping, that I would wake up and discover that it was only a nightmare!
My mother and I in Bulgaria.

When I was a little boy, there was an old Jewish lady living next to my grandma’s house.
I wish I could remember her name now. She visited my grandmother almost every day, and always seemed so lonely to me. She used to bake cookies for me every day. I suddenly remembered her today. I don’t know why.
I guess I miss those cookies.

My 84 year-old grandma is my favorite family member. She lives in Ankara and always tells me stories about her youth...how the Germans invaded our hometown in World War II and how the Soviets liberated them.
I live in a huge four-room apartment in Istanbul.
My girlfriend and I share it with our beloved cat.
